If there's one technique I'd tell every beginner to master before anything else, it's sanding. Not joinery, not finishing, not even cutting square. Sanding. The difference between a wooden toy that looks handmade in a good way and one that looks handmade in a bad way is almost always at the sanding step. After twenty years of hobby builds I've watched a hundred beginner projects, and the ones that disappointed their makers were almost always under-sanded.
This guide is the sanding talk I give every new toy-maker. Not the textbook version — the practical "here's what actually matters and what you can skip" version.
The three things sanding actually does
- Removes machine marks. Every saw blade leaves a trail. Every router bit leaves chatter. Sanding erases the evidence.
- Eases sharp edges. A 90-degree corner from a fresh saw cut feels sharp in a child's hand and looks unfinished. Sanding takes corners from "just cut" to "feels right."
- Prepares wood to take finish evenly. A poorly-sanded surface absorbs finish in patches — light here, dark there. Good sanding gives you a uniform surface that finishes consistently.
The grit sequence — what each does

Standard toy-making sequence: 80 → 120 → 220. That's it. Don't over-think it.
Power sander vs hand sanding
For toy-making, get a random orbital sander. The DeWalt 5-inch is what I use; any quality 5-inch RO sander works. The reason: toy projects involve a lot of flat-face sanding (block sides, train-car bodies, dollhouse panels) and your shoulders will thank you. A power sander does in 30 seconds what would take 5 minutes by hand.
Hand-sand for the parts a power sander can't reach: inside curves of a name puzzle, corners of a block, the carved hollow of a peg-doll seat. Use a sanding stick (sandpaper wrapped around a small wood block) for flat surfaces, and a folded piece of sandpaper for curves.
The technique nobody teaches
Sand with the grain, not against it. Cross-grain sanding leaves visible scratches that no finish hides. On a piece of wood, the grain runs the long direction — sand parallel to it.
Don't lean on the sander. A random orbital does its job under its own weight. Push down and you slow the orbit, fuck up the pattern, and burn the wood. Let it float.
Vacuum between grits. Or wipe with a tack cloth. The reason: 80-grit dust mixed with a 120-grit pad re-scratches at 80-grit depth. Defeats the point.
Break every edge. Not just the obvious ones. Run a sanding block along every edge of every piece at maybe 30 degrees — top, bottom, left, right. Two seconds per edge. The toy goes from "sharp corners" to "feels finished" with this single move.
Test by feel, not by sight. Close your eyes and run your finger across the surface. Your fingertip detects scratches your eye misses. Sand until your finger says smooth.
How long should sanding take?
Honest answer: longer than you think it should. A set of 28 blocks needs about 60 minutes of focused sanding. A push car needs 30 minutes. A rocking horse needs 2 hours. If your sanding step took 5 minutes, you under-sanded.
The trade-off: a toy under-sanded looks under-sanded for its entire life. A well-sanded toy looks better at age 5 than age 1, because the user wears the surface even smoother over time.
Common sanding mistakes
- Skipping grits. 80 to 220 leaves visible 80-grit swirls. Go 80 → 120 → 220 always.
- Over-sanding before assembly. If a piece needs to fit precisely into another, sanding rounds the edge and ruins the fit. Sand AFTER joinery on the visible faces; pre-sand non-joining faces.
- Pressing the sander. Slows the orbit. Causes "pigtail" swirl marks. Lighten up.
- Same paper too long. A worn 120 pad cuts like 220 — but unevenly. Change pads when they stop cutting cleanly.
- Skipping the edge break. Sharp edges look like saw output. Round every edge slightly.
- Cross-grain. Especially with hand sanding. Always parallel to the grain.
Sandpaper that actually lasts
3M sandpaper is what I use almost exclusively. Twice the price of no-name, lasts five times as long, cuts cleanly. Cheap sandpaper loads up with dust, tears at the edges, and leaves grit on the wood. For wet-sanding (advanced)
Some toys benefit from a final wet-sand: dampen the wood with a clean rag, let dry, then sand again with 320. The water raises the wood grain and the second sand cuts the raised fibres flat. Result: a surface that stays smooth even after the toy gets wet (chewed, spilled on, washed). Worth doing on teethers, food sets, and anything that'll see liquid.
Frequently asked questions
What about dust?
Wear a dust mask. Wood dust is a known carcinogen with long exposure, especially MDF and tropical hardwoods. A cheap N95 is the minimum.
Belt sander, random orbital, or detail sander?
Random orbital is the right answer for 95% of toy work. Belt sanders are too aggressive for small parts — they tear off material you wanted to keep. Detail sanders are useful for inside curves but limited otherwise.
How do I know I'm done?
The finger test (above) is the truth. If a 220-grit pass feels silky and a finger swipe finds no rough patches, you're done. The wood is ready for finish.
Can sanding fix a bad cut?
Sanding can true up a slightly off curve or square up a 1-2 degree off cut. It can't fix a saw mistake bigger than that — re-cut.
